Jamul Haven

Jamul Haven is a house located in Jamul, California, 1.6 miles east of Steele Canyon Road, and is on the east side of Jamul Drive in Mexican Canyon. Jamul Haven is a historic, two-story building constructed in 1899, built on a rectangular plan of 2,178 square feet, and was built in the Queen Anne style of architecture, made from heart redwood lumber.
==History==

Charles (not Charles ) M. and Rachel Gifford were early pioneers to the Jamul community when they built their own ranch house, now known as Jamul Haven. He and Rachel obtained a mortgage from A.T. Morrison on January 6, 1898 and arranged for a Queen Anne farm house to be erected, a root cellar dug, and olive orchard planted by 1899. By the year of 1900, the Giffords had expanded their orchards to include prunes and other dried fruit, and in that same year, Charles Gifford listed olive oil manufacturing as his occupation in the United States Census. Charles Gifford is credited with developing the first olive packing company in the San Diego area. Residents of Jamul, California have reported unearthing olive presses in their yards (William Roetzheim 2007). Remnants of olive groves still survive at Singing Hills Golf Course (La Mesa Scout September 7, 1972). At least two olive trees are still alive on the Gifford property in Mexican Canyon (William Roetzheim 2007).
By the year of 1906, Charles M. Gifford paid $10,000 to build an olive factory at 13th and M Streets in San Diego. The C.M. Gifford Company operated until 1961, when the family sold the company to C. Arnholt Smith, who transferred the facilities to the Westgate Breast of Chicken plant at the foot of Crosby Street. They then produced olives and pickled cauliflower (San Diego Union February 3, 1961). At that time, the C.M. Gifford Company operated four olive packing plants in San Diego, and provided significant employment for both the city and county of San Diego, California. In the year of 1920, the Giffords lived with their son Orville D Gifford, and relatives Eva Cone and Lester E Cone. Their domestic servant, Nielsine Skove, also lived with them at this time.〔(Family Search United States Census )〕
